Terms and conditions

  1. By completing the entry form and submitting a voice over or written commentary (the “Entry”), the entrant is deemed to accept these competition terms and conditions, including being bound by New Zealand laws.
  2. Air New Zealand Limited, Private Bag 92007, Auckland, New Zealand is the promoter of this competition.
  3. Should these terms and conditions in any way directly conflict with promotional or competition laws of the entrant’s country of residence the entrant shall be ineligible to enter.
  4. Subject to clause 3, entry into the competition is only open to anyone in the world who is aged 18 years or over and has reached the legal age of majority (as defined in the applicable jurisdiction) in that person’s country of residence.
  5. Air New Zealand, its employees and their immediate families, participating agents and their associated agencies are ineligible to enter.
  6. The competition commences Thursday 17 October 2013 at 10.00am NZT and closes Thursday 7 November 2013 at 5.00pm NZT and closes Thursday 7 November 2013 at 5.00pm NZT (the “Competition Period”). Entries received outside the Competition Period will be ineligible for entry.
  7. No purchase, entry fee, or payment is necessary to enter this competition.
  8. How to enter: To enter, the eligible entrant must select one of two 30 second entry videos at www.airnewzealand.com/voiceforantarctica (the “Website”), and submit either;
    1. a voiceover to correspond to the selected video; or
    2. a written commentary to correspond to the selected video
    The eligible entrant must also complete all fields on the online entry form, including a written submission no more than 300 words in length explaining why they should be selected on “No Ordinary Assignment”.

    Entry into the competition is automatic upon submission of a correct and fully completed online entry form during the Competition Period. Participation in the competition is limited to one entry per person.
  9. All entries must:
    1. be received in English (both voice over and written components);
    2. comply with the technical rules and conventions set out on the Website (as amended by Air New Zealand from time to time);
    3. be the original work of the Entrant and not infringe any intellectual property rights or any other rights of any third party; and
    4. not contain any profanity or obscenity.
  10. Air New Zealand reserves the right to verify the validity of each Entry and exclude any Entry that does not meet the stated entry criteria.
  11. One (1) winning entry will be selected from all eligible entries. The judging process will take place in two stages:
    1. Short List: on Wednesday 13 November 2013 (NZT), a judging panel consisting of at least three (3) people (including representatives from both Air New Zealand and Antarctica New Zealand) will select a short list of up to six (6) finalists from all eligible entries (the “Short List”). Entries will be selected based on the criteria set out in clause 12. All entrants on the Short List will be required to undergo a medial assessment and be cleared by the Antarctica New Zealand medical advisor as fit to travel to Antarctica. The costs of this will be covered by Air New Zealand.
    2. Winner: Air New Zealand and Jason Edwards from National Geographic Society will then conduct one (1) interview (by Skype or in person if based in Auckland) with each entrant on the Short List the week commencing Monday 18 November 2013 (NZT), a final judging panel consisting of at least three (3) people (including Air New Zealand and Antarctica New Zealand representatives and Jason Edwards) will select one (1) winner from the Short List based on the criteria set out in clause 12.
  12. Eligible entries will be judged against the following criteria:
    (a) Criteria for the voice over and commentary submissions:
    • Personality: humour, passion, character and a “can-do” attitude
    • Skill: skills that could be useful on the trip, e.g. communication skills, photography, outdoors experience
    • Passion for the environment
    • Creativity: innovative, engaging
  13. Attempts will be made to notify the winner by phone or email at the contact telephone number or email address provided at the time of competition entry. If Air New Zealand, having used reasonable efforts, is unable to contact the winner prior to 5.00pm Wednesday 27 November 2013 (NZ Time), then the prize will be forfeited and the judges will select the next best entry from the remaining eligible entries. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  14. Once the winner has been notified, the winner’s name will be published on the Website.
  15. The winner will receive the following prize:
    1. One return economy class airfare from their usual country of residence to Christchurch, New Zealand.
    2. Approximately one week of pre-deployment activities in Christchurch hosted by Air New Zealand and Antarctica New Zealand, including basic accommodation and meals. The schedule of activities over this period will be determined by Air New Zealand and Antarctica New Zealand and notified to the winner prior to departure but will be focused on understanding how scientific research undertaken in Antarctica is being utilised in New Zealand and will involve visits to facilities of research partners who work with Antarctica New Zealand.
    3. Return air travel from Christchurch to Scott Base in Antarctica. The dates for travel to and from Antarctica will be dependent on weather and flight scheduling.
    4. Approximately 2 to 2.5 weeks experience on the ice in Antarctica with Jason Edwards interacting with researchers and the Scott Base team to document the scientific research work being done on the ice and bring it to life through social media such as tweets, photographs, video and/or blog posts. Basic accommodation, meals and a guide will be provided. On ice activities will include Antarctic Field Training and interactions with researchers. Scheduled on ice activities will be determined by Air New Zealand and Antarctica New Zealand and may vary depending upon weather conditions.
    5. The use of mobile devices and/or a camera during the Prize Period for the purposes of maintaining an online blog. For the avoidance of doubt such technology must be returned to Air New Zealand at the end of the Prize Period.
  16. The prize must be taken and the winner must be available to travel to Christchurch and Antarctica from Saturday 11 January 2014 to Friday 28 February 2014 (NZ Time) or such other dates as specified by Air NZ (the “Prize Period”).
  17. The winner must comply with the following requirements when at Scott Base:
    1. Follow Antarctica New Zealand’s policies and procedures;
    2. Refrain from making any statement or taking actions which are likely to adversely affect Air New Zealand’s or Antarctica New Zealand’s brand or reputation;
    3. Present themselves in a professional manner;
    4. Work within Air New Zealand’s and Antarctica New Zealand’s Health, Safety and Environment guidelines;
    5. Treat any Antarctica New Zealand property and equipment which are in your control with care;
    6. Report any hazards, accident, injuries or near misses immediately;
    7. Maintain open communications with Jason Edwards, their guide and members of the Scott Base Leadership Team.
  18. Entrants on the Short List and the winner are welcome to generate their own publicity regarding the competition on social media websites (provided such publicity is in accordance with the terms of service of the relevant website), however, any interviews with mainstream media e.g. press, radio and television outlets must be approved in advance by the relevant Air New Zealand contact:
  19. By accepting the prize, the winner agrees to: (a) make themselves available for media appearances and promotional work as reasonably required by Air New Zealand prior to and after the Prize Period up until 31 March 2014; and (b) produce a written blog (accompanied by a series of short videos and/or a selection of photographs) documenting their travels. Blog entries including video footage and photographs must be submitted to Air New Zealand’s Social Media team to be edited and uploaded to the Website during the Prize Period and must comply with the “Blog Requirements” provided by Air New Zealand. No additional payment or other consideration will be provided for media appearances, promotional work or blog entries and no relationship of employment is created by this obligation. Once submitted to Air New Zealand’s Social Media team, the winner acknowledges that blog entries, including all accompanying video footage and photographs become the property of Air New Zealand.
  20. The winner acknowledges that involvement in “No Ordinary Assignment” will require a significant level of physical exertion and by accepting the prize the winner acknowledges that they are in good health and that there is no reason why they should not be able to complete any ‘On Ice Activity”. If the winner is unable to complete any “On Ice activity” for any reason (including, personal injury) Air New Zealand will provide alternative travel arrangements to return the winner home as soon as practicable, subject always to weather conditions and availability of flights.
  21. Each winner is responsible for paying all additional costs associated with the prize that are not specifically included (as stated in clause 15), including (where applicable), spending money, passport and visa expenses, travel and health insurance sufficient to cover the prize activities, taxes, personal expenses, any medical expenses incurred while on the trip, damage to equipment or belongings, cost of any side trips not organised by Air New Zealand made before, during or after the trip, and all other incidentals. In addition, each winner is responsible for any federal, state and/or local tax consequences and for compliance with all governmental reporting and payment requirements.
  22. Each winner is responsible for the safe-keeping of any equipment loaned to them during the Prize Period (including any mobile devices). Loaned equipment must be returned to Air New Zealand at the end of the Prize Period in the same condition as when it was provided (excluding reasonable wear and tear). Any unreasonable damage to, or loss of, loaned equipment will be at the expense of the Winner.
  23. Air New Zealand reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to substitute the prize in whole (or any of its components), with a substitute prize of equal or greater value.
  24. The prize cannot be converted into cash and is non-transferable.
  25. Prize travel from winner’s usual place of residence to Christchurch is redeemable for carriage on Air New Zealand operated services. Where any sector of the winner’s international journey to Christchurch is not operated by Air New Zealand, prize travel will be redeemed for carriage on a Star Alliance partner operated service. Where sectors of the journey to Christchurch are not operated by either Air New Zealand or a Star Alliance partner, prize travel will be redeemed for carriage on a carrier to be mutually agreed between the parties. Travel to and from Antarctica will be arranged by Antarctica New Zealand.
  26. All prize travel on Air New Zealand operated flights will be subject to Air New Zealand’s Conditions of Carriage, (www.airnewzealand.co.nz/general_tc.htm, applicable tariffs and regulations prevailing at the time of travel. Air New Zealand reserves the right to change such terms and conditions at any time. Prize travel will not be eligible to accrue Air New Zealand Airpoints Dollars™ or Status Points and cannot be used in conjunction with Air New Zealand’s Airpoints Programme or any other carriers’ frequent flyer schemes. All travel on carriers other than Air New Zealand will be subject to the operating carrier’s Conditions of Carriage, if any.
  27. Components of the Prize which are not provided by Air New Zealand may be subject to additional terms and conditions, by accepting the prize, each winner agrees to comply with such terms and conditions.
  28. Air New Zealand reserves the right to (a) store electronically any Entry entered in the competition; and (b) exclude all or part of any Entry that is deemed inappropriate, derogatory or that Air New Zealand (in its sole discretion) believes infringes on another persons copyright or other intellectual property rights.
  29. Entrants warrant that, to the best of their knowledge, their Entry is original, is all their own work, has not been copied from any other person, and all relevant permissions have been obtained for any images, music or sounds included in their Entry. The entrant will indemnify Air New Zealand in respect of any liability, claims, demands, proceedings, damages, loss or costs arising out of, or in connection with, a breach of this warranty.
  30. Entrants grant to Air New Zealand a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, transferable, sub-licensable license to use the Entry as Air New Zealand sees fit, including (but not limited to) publishing the Entry on the Website and sharing the Entry with media organisations both in New Zealand and around the world. Unless applicable law prohibits the granting of any exclusive licence, the licence will be an exclusive one, otherwise it will be non-exclusive.
  31. Before being entitled to take the prize, the winner must, if requested by Air New Zealand:
    1. sign and return to Air New Zealand a document prepared by Air New Zealand and/or the Antarctica New Zealand, confirming these terms and conditions and including a liability release and publicity release (where legally permissible);
    2. provide a copy of their passport;
    3. provide a copy of their travel visa (if applicable); and
    4. provide a copy of their travel and health insurance plan for the duration of the Prize Period.
  32. The prize components as described in clause 15 are very much dependent upon weather conditions, flight schedules, availability of Antarctica New Zealand’s and other third party’s resources at Scott Base and other factors beyond the control of Air New Zealand. Air New Zealand reserves the right to vary, modify, extend, suspend or terminate the competition and/or prizes, or remove any Entry at any time, for any reason including (without limitation) if the competition is not capable of running as planned including infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorised intervention, fraud, technical failures, adverse weather conditions, unavailability of any resources provided by Antarctica New Zealand or any third party or any other cause beyond the control of Air New Zealand that corrupts, impairs of affects the administration, security, safety, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this competition. Air New Zealand reserves the right, at its sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, extend or suspend the competition and/or any prizes at any time for what ever reason, to the extent permitted by law.
  33. Air New Zealand assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorised access to or alteration of any Entry. Air New Zealand assumes no responsibility for any injury or damage to participants or any other person’s computer related to or resulting from participation in or down-loading any materials in this competition.
  34. To the extent permitted by law, neither Air New Zealand nor any other person or party associated with this competition shall be liable for any loss or damage whatsoever suffered (including but not limited to direct, indirect and/or consequential loss) or personal injury suffered or sustained in connection with either participation in this competition or with any prizes offered, including for the avoidance of doubt inability to travel or redeem the prize (or any component of the prize) for any reason.
  35. Air New Zealand collects entrants’ personal information in order to conduct the competition. If the information requested is not provided, the entrant may not participate in the competition. Entry into the competition is deemed consent for Air New Zealand to use any Entry, and/or each winner’s details and/or photographs for promotional and media purposes without any further reference, payment or other compensation to the entrant. Please refer to Air New Zealand’s Privacy Policy atwww.airnewzealand.co.nz/privacy_policy.htm regarding the storage and use of personal information.
  36. By entering the competition, the entrant accepts that the personal information provided as part of the promotion will be transferred to and processed by Air New Zealand in New Zealand for the purpose of administrating the competition. Your personal information will at all times be treated in accordance with Air New Zealand’s Privacy Policy (www.airnewzealand.co.nz/privacy_policy.htm).
  37. If any winner fails to comply with any of these terms and conditions, Air New Zealand will, in addition to any other rights it may have whether under these terms and conditions or at law, consider the prize to be forfeited and the judges will select the next best entry from the remaining eligible entries.
  38. This competition and these competition terms and conditions shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of New Zealand. By entering into the competition entrants and any party which uses or takes the benefit of any prize awarded, accept the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of New Zealand.
